#WESTINGHOUSE J34 WE 38 TURBOJET PLUS#

The J34 was used as a takeoff assist on the Lockheed P-2 Neptun. This J34-WE-22A artifact powered the first flight of the Chance Vought XF6U in 1946, McDonnell prototype F2H in 1947, and the Douglas XF3D-1 in 1948. We pulled this old 'dinosaur' out of the school hanger today and did a ground run as a class.

These powered the Chance Vought F6U-1 Pirate, Chance Vought XF7U-1 and F7U-1/-2 Cutlass, McDonnell F2H-1 Banshee, and Douglas XF3D-1 Skyknight. Approximately 5,000 Westinghouse 24C (military designation J34) engines were built. To be capable of reaching such a high speed the boat was fitted with Westinghouse J34 jet engine which produce 3,000 thrust hp. In 1978 its builder, Ken Warby, smashed the existing water speed record at Tumult River near Sydney. Later models produced as much as 4,900 lb with the addition of an afterburner. With a top speed of 276.3 knots The Spirit of Australia is the faster boat ever built. Essentially an enlarged version of the earlier Westinghouse J30, the J34 produced 3,000 pounds of thrust, twice as much as the J30.

The Navy Bureau of Aeronautics ordered two X24C units plus spares in 1945, and, by 1946, four models were under development, including the X24C-2/-4A/-4B/-6. The Westinghouse J34, company designation Westinghouse 24C, was a turbojet engine developed by Westinghouse Aviation Gas Turbine Division in the late 1940s.
